Position Summary
The Institutional Effectiveness (IE) team in the Office of the Provost is committed to providing the highest quality university information and support for decision-making, planning, improvement, and reporting needs of our university partners. We are looking for a design professional skilled in telling stories with data who also possesses a strong commitment to collaboration, equity, and excellence. This person is intellectually curious and possesses a commitment to ethically unlocking the value of data.
The Data Visualization Designer I will assist in developing data visualization products, including interactive dashboards, reports, and presentations. Working alongside the Data Visualization Designer II and our team of Data Analysts, you will help transform complex datasets into clear and engaging visuals that support WashUâ™s diverse audiences, such as faculty, staff, and leadership.
This professional is a committed storyteller, searching for the narrative thread that weaves through complex data sets and will influence how we present information to a broad set of audiences. This position will also play a key role in implementing our IE brand, maintaining visualization and design standards, and supporting other IE team members in this work.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Data Transformation and Dissemination
- Develop data visualization products such as interactive dashboards, reports, and presentations, using tools like Tableau, Excel, PowerPoint, Figma, and Canva.
- Perform descriptive data analysis to support visualizations as needed.
- Prepare data sets as needed for building visualizations.
- Support the design process by contributing to layout, formatting, and interactivity in visualizations.
- Stay up to date with the latest trends and advancements in data visualization and design techniques, tools, and technologies.
Quality Assurance and Review of Products
- Ensure that data visuals are accessible and follow WashUâ™s brand guidelines.
- Conduct quality assurance to check for accuracy, usability, and adherence to style guidelines.
- Work collaboratively with team members and gather stakeholder input to refine designs.
IE Brand Identity
- Assist in maintaining the brand identity and style guide of the IE team that upholds the brand guidelines of WashU.
- Support the development of materials (e.g., templates, guides) to build the IE teamâ™s capacity to execute on the IE brand independently. This includes adherence to accessibility standards and research-based visualization best practices.  Â
- Support maintenance of the IE web presence, updating and unifying our websites to ensure a seamless presentation of the IE brand.

Salary Range
$53,100.00 - $90,600.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
