Senior Veterinary Technician

Title: Senior Veterinary Technician

Location: Upper East Side

Org Unit: Veterinary Services

Work Days: Weekdays and some weekends

Weekly Hours: 35.00

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $34.50 - $37.86

Position Summary

Under general guidance, provides health care to laboratory animals and provides veterinary technical and surgical support to investigators and their research staff

Job Responsibilities

Prepares the operating room for procedures, including preparation and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies.
Assists with experimental and surgical procedures, and in pre- and post-operative care of laboratory animals under the guidance of investigators or RARC veterinarians. Administers anesthesia and monitors anesthetized animals during surgical procedures.
Assists with the implementation of preventive health programs for various species.
Monitors animals to assess their health and well-being. Under minimal supervision, assesses common disease conditions; escalates issues. Administers clinical treatments, collects diagnostic/environmental samples and administers euthanasia as necessary.
Maintains and operates the Veterinary Services pharmacy and dispenses supplies, medication and controlled substances to investigators. Maintains records for controlled substances.
Assists with the education and quality assurance training of animal handling skills and experimental procedures.
Conducts facility orientation tours.
Responsible for ensuring that the MD-PhD Program is compliant with all governing agencies rules and regulations, the foremost of these agencies being the NIH.
Maintains hard copy and/or electronic files and databases. Ensures the security, accuracy and integrity of records.
Generates reports for analysis.

Education

Associate's Degree in related field

Experience

Associates Degree in Veterinary Science, Veterinary Technology, or Animal Health Science.

Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences or Veterinary Technology preferred.

Master of Laboratory Animal Science (MLAS) from a regionally and nationally accredited U.S. college or university or an international equivalent is required in absence of ASR or LAT certification.

Experience as part of a degree program or 6 months experience working with animals

NY State Veterinary Technician Licensure is highly desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to function independently and exercise independent judgment.
Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills.
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated ability to remain focus despite frequent interruptions.

Licenses and Certifications

AALAS certification at Laboratory animal Technician (LAT) level or higher or Academy of Surgical Research (ASR) certification (any level).

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

This position requires the occasional lifting of heavy animals (dogs, pigs, sheep, non-human

primates); Work schedule may include long working days, weekends and holidays; Must be able to

handle fractious animals; Potential exposure to animal bites and scratches, needles and other sharp

instruments, infectious agents, radioisotopes, human xenografts, toxic chemicals and radiation

Work assignments may require travel to the Burke Rehabilitation Center or MSK facilities
