About the Employer

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) serves the region's most vulnerable students, and supports school leaders, teachers, and students across the county. We support about 780 schools and nearly 500,000 students, including the children we educate each year through our Juvenile Court and Community Schools. SDCOE provides a variety of services for the 42 school districts, 129 charter schools, and five community college districts in the county. The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting for a

Special Education Teacher - Alternative Education Program

for the

Special Education Department of the Student Services and Programs

division. The current vacancy is located at 37ECB in San Diego, 92105. Special Education Teacher, Alternative Education Program is responsible for planning and implementing quality learning experiences, preparing daily lesson plans, creating a stimulating instructional environment conducive to student mastery and maintaining case management responsibilities.

This position is full-time and will offer the certificated benefits package, which includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, and will participate in the CalSTRS state retirement system.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education and Experience

Experience:

Experience in the development and writing of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that meet legal requirements, assessment procedures, and adherence to federal and state regulations for students with disabilities. Experience in providing instruction in urban settings, working with a diverse student population, multicultural instructional methods, and strong behavior intervention and classroom management skills; and

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or related field preferred;

Equivalency:

A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (preferred) and experience in the development and writing of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that meet legal requirements, assessment procedures, and adherence to federal and state regulations for students with disabilities. Experience in providing instruction in urban settings, working with a diverse student population, multicultural instructional methods, and strong behavior intervention and classroom management skills.

Certificates, Licenses, Credentials

Valid California Education Specialist teaching credential with authorization in Mild/Moderate; or equivalent document.

Valid English Learner authorization (CLAD or equivalent document).

Valid California Driver's License

CPR and First Aid certification are highly desirable.

ABOUT 37ECB

37ECB offers both a more traditional classroom program and an independent study program for students in grades 7-12. Our career technical education pathways include a barista program, culinary arts, and an entrepreneur program. At 37ECB, students' interests, passions, and needs are woven into daily learning. We provide practical, inquiry-based learning opportunities that teach the core academic subjects. There is also a strong emphasis on the arts and building community with our multiple community partnerships. At 37ECB, we believe in providing opportunities for all students to thrive.

ABOUT JCCS SPECIAL EDUCATION

The Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS) Special Education Program is administered by the Student Services and Programs Division of the San Diego County Office of Education. The procedural safeguards of IDEA apply to students who come under the jurisdiction of the juvenile justice system. The program serves students with disabilities attending school while being detained in juvenile facilities, on probation, or under the jurisdiction of the Health and Human Services Agency.

The JCCS Special Education program provides identification, assessment, and instruction to students with disabilities in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations governing special education. Services are provided year-round based on 246 school days. Students may enter and exit the program at anytime during the year. Due to the nature of these programs, the daily pupil count varies depending on the number of court-ordered placements.

Valid California credentials are a requirement at the time of hire. If you do not possess the required California credentials, you may go to the California Commission of Teacher Credentialing website
